I chose Dr. Phil as my show to document and research because first of all, I appreciate that as the host, he sees both sides of the story. He always asks questions that aren’t misleading and unless one guest is hugely in the wrong (one time a father had been abusive to his wife and children), gives both equal representation. I watched the show on Wednesday, October 3. The subject was “mother/daughter controversies.” Two different stories were presented and again, viewers got to hear equally from both the mothers and daughters.
Another thing I enjoy is that their stories are further developed through video segments/interviews filmed and edited before the show airs. I think there’s a little sensationalism going on with these because with Wednesday’s show, the first daughter had previously been into drugs and was talking about that on the video clip. So they shot her with fake joints, and I personally don’t think they needed that.
For this particular episode, the target audience was most likely mothers, and maybe a small percentage of older daughters. He ended out the show with a music performance from one of the guests, because she recently signed with Wind-Up Records. I thought that was pretty cool that on the first episode I watch for my assignment, the television show and music or the recording industry have come together.
